Placing your students for higher education abroad

Why recommend Cambridge English exams to your students?

Cambridge English exams are valued by colleges, universities and other education providers because they provide high-quality proof of students’ ability to communicate in English. They are also recognised and used by governments, employers and other organisations around the world.

Your students can also use their Cambridge English exam as proof of their language ability when applying for visas in Ireland, Australia, and Canada.

Exams for studying in the UK

Cambridge English exams are widely accepted by colleges and universities in the UK as high-quality proof of language ability.

Exams for student visa applications

UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) has introduced new requirements for Secure English Language Tests (SELTs) for student visas with effect from April 2015. Their website gives full information on the requirements for UK visas.

Students may not need a SELT test for their student visa application if:

  • they are from the European Union, European Economic Area, or Switzerland
  • they are applying to Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) on the UKVI’s list of Tier 4 Sponsors (previously Highly Trusted Sponsors) to study at degree or postgraduate level.

HEIs may still need candidates to prove they have sufficient English ability to complete their course successfully. Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) and Proficiency (CPE) are accepted by almost all UK institutions as proof of sufficient English ability to study an academic course taught in English.

Students applying for pre-sessional or foundation level courses may need a SELT test to prove their English level. We recommend IELTS, which is produced by Cambridge English for this purpose. For more information go to www.ielts.org/uk.

Before applying for their exam, candidates should check the UKVI website for more information on UK immigration policies and procedures, including English language requirements.

Exams for Australian student visa and university applications

Cambridge Assessment English offers globally recognised exams that have been developed to meet the needs of students, and can be used to meet the language requirements to apply for both student visas and university admissions. It is also accepted for Temporary Graduate, Skilled, Former Resident, and Work and Holiday visa programmes.

Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) accepts Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) scores for visa applications, including student visas. The exam can be taken up to two years before your students make their application.
